When and where does START take place?

We usually hold START twice a year, in spring and autumn. It is currently being delivered online.

In 2023 we will have two diets: the spring dates are March 14, 16, and 21, and the fall dates are October 3, 5, and 10.

When do I take START?

We determine the locations for START based on the date of your CCT as indicated on yourlast ARCP resultin your ePortfolio orTrainee-led registration at the end of the training sessionform in your ePortfolio.

Don't expect to be guaranteed a place even if you've applied before. If you wish to change the date on your CCT, you must fill out the form in your ePortfolio.

What if I'm in a sub-specialty training (called a grid)?

If you intend to complete training in an approved subspecialty program, you must have START in that subspecialty.

Autumn: October 3rd, 5th and 10thApril 1-30 (midnight) 2023not yet open

How does RCPCH prioritize applications?

We recommend that you apply for START at the beginning of the application period. We prioritize as follows:

(Video) Schneider inexperienced driver orientation: On the road with a training engineer

  1. Passing candidates, especially in ST8 positions
  2. Candidates with CCT data closest to score, determined by remaining training time and not chronologically; see “CCT Date Annotation” above
  3. Date of receipt of the request

The number of applications is not relevant if your CCT date does not guarantee a place in the assessment. Waiting for your CCT to be completed earlier is not sufficient evidence of a change and we will require confirmation from the Training Program Director and CSAC if this is a GRID course before we will accept an earlier date. You can now submit a record of the training completion date in your ePortfolio to give us the most accurate CCT date possible.

If you think you can get your CCT sooner, or if you have any other information that you may find helpful, you should include it with your application. Be sure to use theComment Boxon the application form and send support for an earlier CCT date from the program director/school principal or CSACtraining.services@rcpch.ac.uk.

If we do not receive the required information and email supportBeforeIf the application window closes, we may not be able to consider you for the shortlist or offer you a place. Please note that there is no guarantee of a place in the trial even if you have support emails as others may take precedence.

The final decision on site assignment rests with the RCPCH office, so we need all the relevant information to be able to make an informed decision.

Payouts and Refunds

You can withdraw up to one week before the valuation date. You must notify us of this in writingtraining.services@rcpch.ac.ukand we may ask you to provide supporting documentation.

If you are unable to take part in the evaluation for unforeseen reasons, please let us know in writing before the day of the evaluation.

refund policy

Entry fee refund

Up to 14 business days

Full refund if position can be filled by another intern

If space cannot be filled full refund less an administration fee of £85

Up to 14 working days in advance

Full refund less an administration fee of £85

No-show on the day or cancellation up to 24 hours before the evaluation, for any reason, will not be refunded.

How do I prepare myself?

You don't have to do any 'review' - the scenarios should be examples of your 'everyday' work, but you will approach them as if you were a consultant from day one.

You may find it helpful to familiarize yourself with and keep up to date with the NICE and GMC policies on confidentiality, consent, legal capacity, duty of disclosure, colleagues in distress, response to complaints, and protection. You might consider checking your medication charts with a pharmacist.

What do I need to know on the day?

At this point the assessment is virtual and all students will receive a briefing via webinar to explain how the assessment works including the system used for assessment.

There is no dress code. Dress like you're going to work. You don't need a suit and tie or a dress, but if it's more comfortable for you, that's fine too!

What if I need decent accommodation?

You have the right to request reasonable accommodation for START and all other higher education and training activities.

Examples of reasonable accommodations include but are not limited to writers/readers, private areas, or additional reading time.

A request for adjustment may be considered unreasonable if it compromises the integrity of the review or if it involves unreasonable or unreasonable costs.

All inquiries should be directed to the Training and Quality Team at training.services@rcpch.ac.uk. We will review all requests and let you know if supporting documents are required.

For more details,Read our Acceptable Accommodation Policy.

How do reviewers rate my performance?

START has anchor statements that allow evaluators to make judgments about the learners at each station.

This includes six domains and all stations cover all domains. These are: decision-making and prioritization, knowledge, complexity management, professional approach, security and risk management, and communication.

An overall ranking is also carried out as an assessment of the overall performance on stage.

Within each area, the student is assessed at three levels: well above expected standard, performing at expected standard, and additional development required.

At the top, it's like pretending to be a consultant for a few weeks. Meeting the expected standard means being a consultant from day one. Advancement means you have reached trainee level and there are some areas to work on; this is fine and expected given the formative nature of the assessment.

You can download theBenchmarking-Standardsunder of.

Reviewers fill aEvaluator Feedback Formin each season, also available for download below.

How do I get feedback?

We will send you your feedback report about six weeks after the evaluation. It will appear in your RCPCH-E-Portfolio and you can find it on your timeline.

Your report includes your overall ranking, total score, performance against skill areas, and written comments for each station. It is similar to the MSF report.

There is no pass/fail marker. However, students may underperform and the feedback will provide recommendations to address all areas of development.

What do I do with the comments?

You must discuss your comments with your parenting officer within four weeks of receiving them. Your manager can help you translate the feedback into a development plan.

You and your manager can use itSTART Assessment Feedback Guide and Specific Development for Educational Caregivers, available for download below.

If you are not in training, you will be asked to nominate a supervisor who can support you in the feedback process.

What if there are concerns?

Responsibility for resolving concerns rests with your local education provider. The faculty works closely with all pediatric schools, faculty teachers and education regulators to ensure a robust system is in place to help students overcome any issues.

Interns are not expected to repeat the assessment.

How does this relate to ARCP (Annual Review of Competence Progression)?

home isnodesigned to maintain progress through training and should not be the sole determinant of ARCP score. Rather, it is another formative test that a trainee has in their portfolio about the skills acquired through the training that are relevant to the implementation of the training. There is a PDP START feedback form that you should use with your manager when you receive feedback.

We will not allow students to return to START.
